What’s that smell?

Is it Fall in the air?  ;)  I’ve had a fab summer.  Between traveling and working with my seniors, shooting some beauty, it’s been busy.  Now we’re moving into fall.  Part of me is sad, but the other half is ready for it.

I’m excited about working with my seniors who will be coming in for their 2nd half session in the great cooler weather.  I love working outside in weather that we’re having.  Everyone enjoys it soooooo much better than those HOT dog days of summer, with high humidity.

Need to clean up the studio today, and I might even grab a senior today, and shoot some.  70′s ?  Yeah, sounds like a plan.

On The Streets

of Memphis in June.  Sean, a buddy of mine came down from New Jersey to visit.  Click on any image to see larger versions as well.

While he was here we tore up Tn. Interstate and side roads.  While making a quick trip to Memphis, I thought we should swing on down to Beale Street to see what was shake’n.

We met Gino sitting at a corner bistro checking people in the door.

Gino is also a very talented artist in his own right.  He whipped out a portfolio of his work. Very talented fellow to be honest.  Most of the images were pencil sketches.

We talked a while then moved on.  We did catch up with Gino later at shift change, where he let someone else take over his spot.

We moved on down the street, and met up with JOE  [green hat].  This guy was a walking encyclopedia.  He rambled off more facts about the building we were standing in front of, and some of the history of Beale street and it’s folks, than I could have even dreamed of learning.

After spending some time with Joe, we thought we’d hike on down to the river front, near Mud Island.

While walking under an overpass, Sean spotted Larry.  We stopped for a minute and chatted with him as well.

Man it was HOT outside.

One word of caution.  HYDRATE while hoofing it in Memphis on a muggy hot day :)

It was easy walking down to the River Front.  Keyword, DOWN.  Making it up back to Beale street, cameras in tow, was sump’n else. ;)

Larry was a quiet fella.

Not much too say.  He may have been thinking to himself, what in the world are these knuckleheads doing out walking the hot streets Mid-Day?

We walked down along the river on the street side, and never got to the water.  Didn’t seem like much was going on, and we were at least 1/2 mile from Mud-Island anyway.

We cut back up the block, and Sean wanted to run into a corner store to get something to put on for sun.  He was beginning to get a little pink from that Summer Sun :)

While Sean was getting some lotion, I met up with Calvin near some trollies.  I really think Sean was just chilling out, and cooling off on me inside that store. ;)

Love that Stogie Calvin was puff’n on.  30 seconds later, he was gone, taking a peek over his shoulder all the while puff’n that baby.

Around this time, I was starting to get really hungry.  Breakfast had been several hours ago, and I knew right up the street, some great food awaited us.

Sean was more of a RIB guy, but I wanted pulled BBQ.

We moved on into one of the first places I could get to, while I could still stand.

Did I say it was HOT OUTSIDE?

We sat down and I shoveled in some BBQ and munched on fries.  Yep, that hit the spot.  Man did I need that.  Sucked down like 100 glasses of Sweat Tea as well.  It seemed like 100 anyway.

On the way out of there, I asked one of the employees for a quick shot.  Which reminds me.  I have to send a print to him this week.

I wish I could remember his freak’n name.  Real polite guy too, as were all I met.

Matter of fact, I liked that BBQ sandwich so much, I brought home some BBQ sauce on my shorts.

As my wife would say, “Can’t take you anywhere”.

Now we had to walk off lunch, which I didn’t mind at all.  I felt like I had ate half that pig.

Met this charming young lady selling drinks right outside next door where we feasted on BBQ.  I can’t remember her name either, but she was a delight to talk to.

One more stop down the street, and we met up with this guy.  I think he was a club barker, or that’s what I call ‘em.  You know.

Hey folks, great food and drinks right here. Step on inside.

Real kewl dude.  He got side tracked though, when two girls to walk up near us.  ;)

What cha going to do?

Then we met up with ????   I have no clue to his name either, but he was Very, Very, Very Deep.

He got to reciting some verses of things he wrote.  I mean this stuff just rolled off his tongue like water.

I caught like every 5th word.

I bailed out on the conversation the best I could, and we made tracks for the car in the parking garage, and left Memphis in the rearview mirror.

Mr.Ray

Well, you know me.  Any chance to get outside, and I’m there.  Thought about jumping on over to ReelFoot lake, to see what was going down.  Stopped in the visitors center for a minute, then drove on up to Tiptonville.

One of my favorite spots.  Hooked up with Mr.Ray.  Ray was working near a doorway, when I saw him, in the small downtown area.  He was cleaning up a building for a friend of his, who plans on opening up a new biz there in a month or so.

Ray was originally from Indiana.  We talked about weather, the river, deer, his dad, and cars.  He used to have a 68 SS Chevelle when is was younger in Indiana.    He loved that car.  He took the stock engine out, and replaced it with a Corvette engine, with a 6 pack for a carburetor ;)

After some of the things he told me about him and that car, I told him how did he live to be the ripe old age of 51.  Of course, I told him, he was just a wet nosed punk, since I had 4 more years on him…

His dad passed around 2 years ago, and his mom, around 10 years ago.  He told me he likes working by himself, so he can set his own pace.  By the looks of the inside of that building, he’ll have much to do.

Mr.Ray, it was a pleasure spending 1/2 hour with you.

Ahhhh here we are

rolling out of winter.  Finally.  Been busy with new sets in the studio, and catching up on moving data around.  Looking forward to spring, as everyone else is as well.  Hoping to put together my coffee table book by the end of the year too.  Time permitting.

Looking forward to shooting some editorial/fashion styled work in Memphis within the next two weeks.  Should be quite fun.  Pulling together the team right now.

March – Chicago Bound for 4 days of shooting up there.  Hope Old Man Winter has left for the year.  You never know about March weather.  Here or up north.

Warmer days are just around the corner.. ;)

Big Boys

Well, got another chance to swing out of the studio for a while today.  Weather was Fab.

Got kind of crazy for a while with the wind, gusting up to around 35 mph, but it’s all good.

Went to one of my favorite Eagle spots, and saw this fellow sitting around the nest while mom was on the egg’s.  I thought I would wait him out for a while.  I knew if he was to leave, he would jump off toward me, because of the wind.

1/2 hour later, he decided to go hunting.. ;) .  I stayed in the SUV due to the wind gusting out there to help keep me stable.  Click on any picture to see a larger version of it.

I wanted this bird. ;)

Anyway, he jumped, and as predicted, right into that gusting wind.

After getting some shots of him, I knew it would be a while before he came back, I decided to head back down toward the south end.

Water is so low, I thought I drop on down, and get a shot of some cypress stumps… just for kicks.

After last week’s encounter of walking up on a snake, I decided to really keep my eyes peeled ;)

I stopped by Gray’s Landing for a Cheese Samich, and talked with the guide there about the eagles and snakes.

He told me he’s seen snakes heads popped out of old Mounds during the winter, on sunny days trying to grab some rays too.

I guess everyone likes the sun during the winter months.

As I was walking out from the cypress stumps a Black truck drove by pulling a john boat.  The gentlemen waved, and I returned the gesture.  When I saw that beard, I said there he is.

I threw the camera in the back seat, and drove off after him.  Luckly for me, no one pulled in between us, and I was able to flag him down 3 miles from where I first saw him.

We pulled off on a side road and I introduced myself to him.  He let me grab a quick shot of him, and we got to talking, about the wildlife up there.  He’s seen it all.  Rattlesnakes, bobcat, turkeys, duck, pelican’s, etc…

He offered to take me out one day to see if we can’t shoot some Bobcat images.

He did warn me though, that those guys are pretty wicked, and we would have to keep our wits about us while trying to capture some images of them.

I may stick with eagles for a while ;)

Robert…..

Weather was decent today, so I thought I’d get out some.  Rolled up to Reelfoot lake to see what was going on up there.  I think everyone else thought the same thing too.

Met some nice folks from New Mexico, Alabama, and Utah, while I was taking in the sites.  Most of them Eagle watching.  I think one nest that I frequent doesn’t have any babies in it.. ;(  Made me kind of sad.  I stayed there for 45 minutes, and never saw an adult land in it, which was kind of unusual.

After leaving the North end, and driving back, I got into Tiptonville.  I saw this fella standing on the side of the road, thumbing a ride, so I stopped.  I introduced myself to him, and mentioned that I was a portrait photographer, and asked if I could take a quick shot of him?  He smiled and said sure, why not.

He told me his name was Robert, but everyone calls him BO.  So BO it is..  He wanted to bumb a cigarette off me, but I told him I didn’t smoke, however; I gave him 5.00 to run into the quick mart so he could get his smokes.

After he came out, I asked him where he was headed.  He told me up road just a piece to his nephew’s house, who was home after getting in from the river.  So I told him to hop in.

It seems Robert, I mean BO, has does quite a bit in his days.  He drove a tractor trailer rig for 20 years.  Burned out, and got out.  He’s worked as a carpenter, and did some plumbing work as well.

Right now, he’s retired.  He’s thinking of moving to Arkansas to live with his girlfriend.  He said he just had to get out of the house for a while today, while the weather was warm.  I agreed with him 100%

So Robert my friend, if you decide to mosey on over to Arkansas, please be safe out there.

After I took him to his nephew’s house, I drove back up to the North End to see if I could stir something up.  Took a few snaps here and there, and actually almost stepped on a snake.  If you look closely you’ll see one eagle flying around too.

I thought that snake was dead.  I mean really.  Mid February, with some snow still on the ground.  Right?  Well he wasn’t.  He didn’t much appreciate me poking him with a stick either.

Just before I saw him, I was wading down around the reeds trying to get a low vantage point for the lake shot, and all the time I’m thinking to myself, “shouldn’t have to worry about snakes this time of year”.

WRONG!

So the next time I’m back up that way, I’ll will take a closer look at where I’m walking.  I usually do, in the spring / summer time, but Mid February?  Hmmmm

All he was doing was soaking up the sun, and I guess he got out of the house today as well, and enjoyed the warmer weather… :)

After visiting my little friend, I eased on out of the North end, and headed home.

Not sure what this building was used for at one time.  It had power to it long ago.  Not sure how long it will still be there, so I thought I’d grab a shot of it as well.

Very peaceful day out there today.

Two Thousand 11

Yep, another year has slip slided away..  Boy they go fast.  I hope everyone had a decent 2010.  I’d like to thank all my customers as well.  Without you, there is no Keepsake.  I hope 2011 finds everyone healthy and prosperous.

As of now, I’m basically cleaning up the shop, archiving customer files, and painting new backgrounds.  I’m moving further in a different direction with regard to small children’s photography as well, which I’m excited about.

Along the lines of my senior work.  I’ve acquired some new outside locations, which should prove very nice.  I’m rather excited about using this location with some additions to it, that I’ll be in the process of building in the spring.

I’ll be buying a new camera in spring, that will allow me to shoot a lot later in the evenings too.  This should prove very useful, and providing me with better use of the evening colours.

Well, pretty much it.  Hope to see some of you this year.

Warmest

Boy oh Boy

How does time get away so fast.  I’m always amused when I read statements on FB, how the kids wish the weekend would hurry up and get here… ;)

I remember when I did that.  My dad would say, “Quit wishing your life away”….  I understand what he meant by that now.

Anyhoo, this is the time of the year, I clean things up.  Paint new b/g’s and sets.  I’ll be getting a new camera after the first of the year sometime, which will allow me to shoot a lot later in the evenings, which will be a big plus.

I have a nice surprise coming up with my H.S. Seniors in 2011 ;)   as well.

Well, back to cleaning up shop.  Hope everyone has a great Christmas this year.

Be safe out there.

Nikki, Joey, and Drew

LiL Drew was a handfull to keep up with… as most little guys his age.

It’s a great big world at his age ;)

I thought we’d go outside and take advantage of the nice weather before it turned on us.

This is such a great time of the year to shoot outside.

No humidity, no bugs to speak of.

I think some of the brush in the field was as tall as Little Drew ;)   So why not hitch a ride on top of dad’s shoulders.

We shot as much as the light would allow, then we finished up in the studio for some quick shots.

Drew!  I found your Button :)
